A PEACE OF MARS

Digital Animation  |  01:00  |  Silent  |  2021–2026

Conceptual Background

The question of whether a true safe space exists for those who constantly suffer from systemic discrimination is a query that often occupies my mind. In looking across the landscape of the United States and searching far beyond its borders, I have frequently come to the troubling conclusion that a completely safe haven free from prejudice does not exist on Earth. This realization sparked the creation of "A PEACE OF MARS," which originally began in 2021 as a three-minute scored piece and has now been distilled into a sharp, silent, one-minute conceptual edit.

As a moving-image work, the project interrogates the systemic limits of human empathy and the global ubiquity of bias. If safety cannot be guaranteed within our borders, nor found across international territories, the work posits a provocative alternative: that human equity can only be realized on an untouched, extraplanetary landscape. By forcing a confrontation between digital simplicity and monumental history, the work utilizes minimalist brevity to amplify its core social critique and question the elusive nature of belonging.

Artwork Synopsis

The animation re-contextualizes archival NASA animation of the Perseverance rover landing on Mars, transforming the vehicle's scientific instrumentation into a diagnostic tool for human prejudice. In this silent one-minute space, the rover's technical mission shifts from searching for microbial life to analyzing the Martian soil for the social toxins that plague humanity, checking for the deep-seated traces of racism, colorism, xenophobia, and systemic elitism.

When the diagnostic readouts declare "Results: None Found," the phrase "Welcome Home" emerges as both a solace and a haunting critique, suggesting that complete safety from human bias can only be found millions of miles away on an uninhabited, barren red planet.
