Conceptual Background

"A PEACE OF MARS" is a conceptual moving image work that interrogates the systemic limits of human empathy and the global ubiquity of bias. The project is rooted in an ongoing inquiry into whether an absolute safe space can truly exist for individuals who endure chronic, intersectional discrimination. If safety cannot be guaranteed within the borders of the United States, nor found across international territories, the work posits a provocative alternative: that human equity can only be realized on an untouched, extraplanetary landscape. Initially developed in 2021 as a three-minute scored short film, this silent, one-minute iteration was finalized in 2026 for the CineSpace Short Film Competition, utilizing minimalist brevity to amplify its core social critique.

Artwork Synopsis

The animation re-contextualizes archival NASA footage of the Perseverance rover landing on Mars, adapting the vehicle's scientific instrumentation into a diagnostic tool for human prejudice. By filtering a monumental achievement of human space exploration through the lens of social equity, the film functions as a silent, direct inquiry into the elusive nature of belonging and the survival of marginalized identity.
